Zion man accused of stabbing relative, killing family dog ​​and endangering children

ZION, Ill. — A Zion man who ingested illegal drugs is suspected of stabbing a relative, shooting and killing his family dog ​​and putting a toddler in a trash can before being arrested by police, the department announced Wednesday.

Zion Police officials said that around 11:15 a.m. Monday, June 3, officers responded to the area of ​​31st Street and Gabriel Avenue following reports of an assault with a knife.


Arriving officers located an 18-year-old man hiding nearby in the 1900 block of Carmel Boulevard. Police said the man suffered a puncture wound to his jaw following an incident at a home in the 3000 block of Gabriel Avenue.

The victim, suffering from non-life-threatening injuries, named a relative, Arthur Scarborough, 22, of Zion, as the attacker. The stabbing victim also reported hearing gunshots as she ran away.

Officers then found Scarborough heading north in the 3000 block of Gabriel Avenue. Police said they noticed him “manipulating the lid of a nearby trash can.” Upon further investigation, police discovered a 2-year-old child was trapped inside and trying to free himself.

The little child was removed from the trash by police and returned unharmed to his family members.

Officers placed Scarborough under arrest after unsuccessfully attempting to disarm police, officials said.

According to police, investigators learned that Scarborough was reportedly suffering “significant mental health issues after using illegal drugs a few days prior.” Police say he entered his family's home with a handgun, threatened several people inside and fatally shot his family dog, a French bulldog.

Police said that after the shooting, Scarborough grabbed the 2-year-old out of the house and put him in a nearby trash can.

After his arrest, Scarborough was taken to a local medical facility for treatment. Police said he continued to display erratic behavior and threatened to harm others.

Officers then booked Scarborough into the Lake County Jail, where he remains pending his first court appearance on several weapons-related felony charges and several misdemeanors, including domestic battery and endangering life. children.

Police did not provide any booking photos of Scarborough.
