Zion man accused of stabbing person in jaw, shooting dog, throwing child in trash

A Zion man is being held in the Lake County Jail after allegedly stabbing a person in the jaw and killing a dog, authorities said.

Zion Police Department officers were dispatched to the area of ​​31st Street and Gabriel Avenue on June 3 at 11:15 a.m. following a “chaotic string of 911 reports” referring to a disturbance resulting in a person being shot or stabbed, authorities said.

A team of responding officers located an injured 18-year-old victim in the 1900 block of Carmel Boulevard suffering from a puncture wound to the jaw, authorities said.

The victim reported being stabbed inside a residence in the 3000 block of Gabriel Avenue by a family member, later identified as Arthur Scarborough, 22, of Zion, authorities said .

The Zion Police Department has the spelling of its name as Scarborough, while the precinct clerk's office has the spelling of its name as Scarbough.

The victim also reported hearing gunshots as she fled the residence, authorities said.

The Zion Fire Department was contacted to medically treat the victim, whose injuries were not deemed life-threatening.

Simultaneously, another second team of officers found Scarborough heading north in the 3000 block of Gabriel Avenue, officials said.

When officers caught up with Scarborough, they noticed he was handling the lid of a nearby trash can, authorities said.

Police found Scarborough trying to hide a 2-year-old child in the trash who was actively trying to free himself, authorities said.

The officers handcuffed Scarborough and removed the child from the trash, authorities said.

The child was unharmed and was returned to an adult family member.

While Scarborough was in police custody, authorities said he tried unsuccessfully to disarm a police officer.

During the investigation following the incident, officers and investigators learned that Scarborough had used an unidentified illegal controlled substance days earlier and was suffering from significant mental health issues, authorities said .

While suffering from mental health issues, authorities learned that Scarborough entered his family's residence in the 3000 block of Gabriel Avenue brandishing a handgun and threatened several people with 'interior.

Scarborough ultimately discharged his firearm, killing the family's French bulldog, before removing the child from the residence and placing him in a nearby trash can, authorities said.

Scarborough was transported to an area medical facility and kept under police guard while being treated for a host of issues unrelated to his physical arrest, authorities said.

Scarborough continued to display erratic behavior and made disturbing statements about his desire to harm more people, authorities said.

Investigators reviewed their findings with the Lake County State's Attorney's Office, which charged Scarborough with a Class 3 felony count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a charge of class 4 felony for reckless discharge of a firearm and one count of class four felony for aggravated cruelty. to the animals, authorities said.

He also faces several misdemeanor charges, including domestic battery and child endangerment, authorities said.

Scarborough was released from the area medical facility and transported to the Lake County Jail.

He appeared in Lake County Magistrate's Court on June 6, was held for a detention hearing the same day, and then was held in custody until his trial.

His next court date is June 26, according to court records.
