The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating a shooting on Youngstown's west side that sent two people to the hospital, including a Youngstown police officer.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Youngstown Police Department's Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating a shooting on the city's West Side that sent two people to the hospital, including a Youngstown police officer.

Police said a call came in around 1 a.m. Thursday for a domestic violence situation in the 100 block of South Maryland Avenue.

According to a police news release, a man in the house shot at a police officer and the officer returned fire.

According to a BCI spokesperson, the man who was shot and the police officer were both taken to hospital.

The man who was shot is in critical condition. His name has not yet been released.

The police officer was not injured and was released, according to BCI, which specifies that he was transported to hospital “as a precautionary measure”.

The officers involved have been placed on leave, as required by police department policy. Internal Affairs verifies that YPD rules have been respected.

BCI was still on scene investigating early Thursday.
