Youth charged with attempted murder in New Jersey boardwalk stabbing attack

Juvenile accused of stabbing another teen over Memorial Day weekend

Authorities say it was a mutual fight

Local authorities say coastal town is still safe

OCEAN CITY — A juvenile is charged with attempted murder after stabbing a teenager on the boardwalk of one of New Jersey's most family-friendly coastal towns over Memorial Day weekend, authorities say.

An unnamed juvenile was arrested in Pleasantville on Tuesday, June 4, and charged with multiple felonies for a stabbing in Ocean City, according to the Cape May County District Attorney's Office.

The young person's name cannot be made public because he is a minor. Authorities have not released the age or gender of the suspect.

The arrested juvenile is charged with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree aggravated assault and two weapons offenses.

Stabbings on Ocean City, N.J. boardwalk were 'mutual fight'

According to prosecutors, a group of unruly teenagers were gathered on the Ocean City boardwalk around 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 1.

The teens then engaged in a “mutual fight,” prosecutors said.

The victim, a 15-year-old man, was stabbed in the stomach. He was hospitalized and is expected to recover.

Investigators spoke to witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage to identify their suspect. Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said.

“This cooperative effort underscores our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our community,” Sutherland said.

Ocean City officials say the coastal city is still safe

Sutherland's comments about the need to keep the coastal town safe echo statements from local authorities in the days following the stabbing. Ocean City was one of three coastal cities that experienced teen chaos over Memorial Day weekend, including Seaside Heights and Wildwood.

Ocean City Police Chief Bill Campbell said last week that the stabbing was an isolated incident. There were enough police officers on the boardwalk to handle the evening's events, he said.

“We are the safest city and that’s why people come here,” Mayor Jay Gillian said.
