Young man 'very' critical after shooting near north side of Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — A young man is in critical condition after being found shot to death Friday evening near north Indy.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched around 8:32 p.m. to the 3700 block of Salem Street after receiving reports of numerous shots being fired in the area. The run then turned into shooting a person.


Upon arrival, IMPD said officers found a young man suffering from at least one gunshot wound in the street. The victim was transported to an area hospital in “very” critical condition, according to IMPD.

At the time of publishing this article, police have not yet confirmed the age of the victim.

IMPD Captain Mark McCardia confirmed that the gunfire also damaged some homes in the area and that a resident's pet dog was killed by a stray bullet at some point during the shooting. No other injuries were reported.

McCardia added that preliminary information indicates the shooting happened on the same street where the victim was found.

McCardia insisted there was no longer an active threat to the public. Officers have not yet provided any information regarding a possible person of interest.

No further information on a potential suspect or possible motive was immediately available.

The shooting remains under investigation.
