Police believe a 3-year-old girl was shot and injured Tuesday in Montgomery County, Maryland. Details of his injury were not immediately known, but police said it did not appear to be life-threatening.

Police were called to the shooting around 11:30 a.m. at an apartment in the 19700 block of Walkers Choice Road in Montgomery Village. The little girl was taken to hospital.

It's not yet clear how she obtained the gun, but Montgomery County police said they arrested three adults at the home where the shooting occurred.

Authorities said all three adults were in the apartment when the first officers arrived. It was unclear whether any of them lived in that apartment.

Montgomery County police are investigating how a 3-year-old girl who killed herself obtained a gun. News4's Jackie Bensen reports the girl's injuries are not life-threatening.

After waiting more than three hours, Montgomery County detectives and crime scene investigators received a search warrant and entered the apartment. After the search began, Montgomery County animal control officers were called to the scene. They removed what appeared to be three cats from the apartment.

Many children live in the apartment complex. One mother told News4 she wishes people would make it a higher priority to keep guns out of children's hands by using a safe or other means.

Montgomery County police also stressed the importance of keeping guns out of the reach of children.

This is the second time in less than 48 hours that a young child has accessed a gun and committed suicide in the Washington, DC area. Late Sunday, a 4-year-old girl was shot and injured in Cheverly, Maryland. Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the weapon used in the shooting.

Unintentional firearm injuries are a leading cause of death among children, according to data released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They emphasize the importance of safe gun storage.
