Legend, Jack Ratcliffe, 17, from York, trains for his 5km running challenge

A York teenager is taking on a running challenge for his school after being inspired by a 2024 London Marathon runner with Down syndrome.

Jack Ratcliffe, 17, will run at Applefields School on Thursday to raise money for sports equipment after improving his running through the Couch to 5K challenge.

He saw 19-year-old Lloyd Martin complete the marathon in April, becoming the youngest person with Down syndrome to complete the course.

Jack originally aimed to raise £100 for his school, but the current total has exceeded £1,000.

Jack trains for the challenge three times a week after school and on weekends.

His mother Alison Metcalfe said she was “very, very proud” of what he had achieved.

“Running 5K is a challenge for Jack. He recently started the Couch to 5K but needed a reason to do something,” she said.

“Seeing him progress over the weeks has been incredible to watch.”

His classmates and teachers are ready to cheer him on and greet him at the finish line.

Jack, a York City FC supporter, is raising money to buy PE equipment because of his love of football and other sports, his family said.

“After the challenge, Jack will sit down with the teachers and discuss how the money will be used,” Ms Metcalfe said.

“He wants to continue running because it will help him improve his football.”
