Wyoming County woman convicted of having sex with minor

RAVENCLIFF, W.Va. — A Wyoming County woman will spend one to ten years in prison for engaging in sexual activity with a minor.

Brittany Kay Morgan, 33, of Ravencliff, was sentenced Wednesday for exhibition of obscene material to a minor, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and third-degree sexual assault. She pleaded guilty to the charges on March 13.

Agents said that during the period of August 2021 to February 2022, Morgan had sexual intercourse with a minor male, provided him with smoking vapes and placed pornography on his cell phone.

Wyoming County Prosecutor Gregory Bishop said that after careful consideration of all aspects of the investigation, the state reached a plea agreement with the defense.

Bishop also acknowledged the attention the case has received from the public.

“This case received significant publicity from the time the charges were filed, placing immense pressure on the West Virginia State Police to make a premature arrest,” Bishop said.
He said sex crimes are particularly difficult to prove, especially when much of the evidence is on cell phones and computers.

However, Bishop said the West Virginia State Police had their full support in conducting a thorough investigation, no matter how long it took.

“One of the easiest ways to undermine a case is to rush an arrest without first conducting a full and thorough investigation. Without a professional investigation, we would not have been able to secure a conviction and bring justice to the victims of this crime. I commend the State Police in general, and Sergeant Palmateer in particular, for ignoring the public outcry based on rumor and speculation and focusing on their job.

Assistant Prosecutor Derek Laxton of Wyoming County served as the lead prosecutor in this case.
Sergeant Palmateer of the West Virginia State Police investigated the crime.
