Worcester mobilizes to help those displaced by Washington Heights fire

WORCESTER ― After Sarah Perron's father died in January, her first thought was to donate most of his clothes and furniture. She put two 32-inch televisions up for sale online.

But after hearing about the June 4 fire that raged through a Washington Heights apartment complex and displaced about 35 residents — many of them young children — Perron changed his mind.

On Thursday, she stood in line at the complex's front desk, waiting to speak with management about how she could offer non-perishable items to residents who had lost their homes.

“I’d rather give it to someone who needs it,” Perron said. “They are good things: shoes that have never been worn, clothes that still have labels, lots of books. My daughter grew up quickly, so I have a lot of clothes from her.
