Woman surrenders after early morning shooting in Milwaukee

A 35-year-old man was shot and killed Friday morning by a 30-year-old woman who then turned herself in to police.

The fatal shooting happened around 10:03 a.m. in the 2400 block of North 54th Street, according to Milwaukee police.

The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation. This case will be referred to the Milwaukee District Attorney's Office for review.

This shooting comes two days after 13 people were shot and killed Wednesday in Milwaukee. This wave of gun violence prompted Milwaukee leaders to declare it was time to “double down” on violence prevention.

“I am outraged by the level of suffering that people are going through in this city because unfortunately – and I've said this many times – there are just too many people who have easy access to guns who shouldn't have that kind of access, and they're using that access and those guns to hurt people across our city,” Mayor Cavalier Johnson said Thursday.

The wave of violence comes even as the city is seeing a drop in homicides and nonfatal shootings compared to the same period last year.

There were 59 homicides reported in Milwaukee on Thursday, compared to 70 during the same period in 2023. That year, the city saw 172 total murders.

City data also shows there have been 273 nonfatal shootings in Milwaukee so far this year. A total of 400 such shootings were reported to police during the same period in 2023, a year that ended with 837 nonfatal shootings.

This story will be updated.
