FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, July 4, 2024 3:58 p.m.

(Ottawa) – The Ottawa Police Service is investigating a case involving a woman in the sex trade who posed as a member of the Human Trafficking Unit and attempted to extort a large sum of money from an individual seeking to purchase sexual services.

We would like to remind the community that the Ottawa Police actively investigate human trafficking and related offences. However, the police will never demand any form of payment from those involved in these acts, those who report them or victims.

Additionally, it is important to understand that obtaining sexual services for payment is a crime under section 286.1 of the Criminal Code.

The Ottawa Police Human Trafficking Unit prioritizes the safety and well-being of victims and survivors of human trafficking, whether or not they choose to participate in the criminal justice system or seek help to exit it. We strive to treat everyone with compassion, dignity and respect, and seek to minimize re-trauma by actively connecting victims and survivors with internal and community supports that best meet their needs and wishes.

If you or someone you know is caught in the cycle of human trafficking and needs help, we are here to help, please contact us; [email protected], toll-free at 1-800-292-1168 or 613-236-1222 ext. 5005.
