Vacationing parents of family of 8 die after being pulled from water in Martin Co.: MCSO

STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — Two vacationing parents in Pennsylvania drowned Thursday afternoon after getting caught in a possible rip current in Martin County.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) confirmed that Brian Warter and Erica Wishard died after being pulled from the surf at Stuart Beach, behind the Hutchinson Island Resort by Marriott, on Northeast Tradewind Lane.

MCSO reported that Warter and Wishard, who were each parents of three children, were part of a family of eight vacationing in Florida.

“They're teenagers. They're not even 20 years old yet. They've been through two dramatic scenarios,” said Deputy Chief John Budensiek. “They were on the beach and saw them drown. They observed resuscitation efforts on the beach. They were at the hospital witnessing resuscitation efforts, so they are extremely traumatized.”

Rescuers were dispatched after the 911 call around 1:30 p.m. The nearest stand was about 400 to 500 feet away, according to MCFR District Chief Joe Lobosco.

“They're trying to use all four wheels to get to that location as quickly as possible. Obviously the emergency signs are a big help in speeding up and getting to where the potential victim is,” said Lobosco.

Warter and Wishard were unconscious when rescuers pulled them from the water, Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) previously reported. Rescuers performed CPR before being rushed to Martin North Hospital.

“The children, at least one of their children, called 911. Our dispatcher can hear the child screaming, trying to talk to him while swimming parallel, relaxing, getting carried away by the rip current, instead of fight it. But, unfortunately, they weren't strong enough swimmers,” Budensiek added.

New Yorker victim of violent attack on Publix just left rehab and tries to return home: MCSO

STUART, Fla. (CBS12) — The man accused of violently attacking a woman in the parking lot of a Stuart grocery store before stealing her vehicle reportedly told investigators he had just left a local drug and alcohol rehab center .

He claimed to have gotten out of rehab and taken an Uber to the Publix on Cove Road, the Martin County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) wrote in an update. MSCO said the man, identified as Carlos Manuel Lozada, was from New York and said he wanted to return home.

Lozada, 37, is accused of assaulting the victim as she left the grocery store. He allegedly stole her belongings and left in her vehicle.

“He walked up to her, took the keys from her, found the vehicle and fled the parking lot in her stolen car,” said Martin County Sheriff's Chief Deputy John Budensiek. “This is clearly an extremely evil individual who has no concern for the personal safety of others.”

Deputies caught up with Lozada heading toward Hobe Sound on Bridge Road, just west of US1. MSCO deputies said they had to use a PIT maneuver to arrest the suspect.

“We know it spun in the air once and hit a tree, causing significant damage,” Budensiek said. The sheriff's office shared several images of the aftermath of Lozada's arrest as well as the destroyed and smoking vehicle.

The sheriff's office described Lozada as “extremely traumatized” after the accident. He was taken to hospital and is expected to face numerous offenses after his release.

Woman handcuffed after shooting boyfriend and barricading herself in her home

HOBE SOUND, Fla. (CBS12) — Martin County Sheriff's deputies say a woman barricaded herself inside her home for nearly two hours after shooting her boyfriend.

It happened around 8:30 a.m. Friday in Hobe Sound at a duplex along Parkway Drive, just east of Southeast Federal Highway.

Jessica Sukmana, 46, was taken from her home in handcuffs by the Martin County Sheriff's Swat Team around 10:10 a.m. Friday.

Neighbors said the series of bizarre events began at 7 a.m.

Ring doorbell camera video shared with CBS12 News shows an unidentified woman knocking on neighbor David Cram's door.

“Dude, there’s an emergency!” she screamed. “Someone is being attacked!”

“What are you talking about?” Cram replied. The woman is then seen running away from Sukmana's duplex.

An hour later, Cram said the unidentified victim came to his house, begging for help and bleeding.

“He runs through my bushes right here and falls into my driveway soaked in blood on one side. He's talking about 'she shot me! Call the police!' And I'm like, what the hell?! said Cram.

Cram and another neighbor helped the man and called 911.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A teenage motorcyclist is accused of reaching triple-digit speeds Monday morning while flying over a four-lane divided highway in Port St. Lucie.

The Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD) says the motorcyclist was spotted heading west on Southwest Crosstown Parkway and recorded a speed of 108 mph in a 45 mph zone before turning left onto Southwest Bayshore Boulevard.

The PSLPD officer kept an eye on the 17-year-old motorcyclist and reported that he turned around before doing a wheelie. Eventually, the motorcycle stopped at a car wash located a few blocks south of the intersection of Sainte-Lucie Boulevard West.

At that point, the officer simply walked over, pulled out the key and took the suspect into custody, the PSLPD release continued. The police department's statement said the officer's actions prevented the risk of prosecution.
