Woman killed in Fashion Island shooting

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — A woman was shot and killed and another person was seriously injured in a gunshot wound at Fashion Island in Newport Beach on Tuesday, the Newport Beach Fire Department confirmed.

The shooting occurred during a robbery near the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Fashion Island shopping center, located at 401 Newport Center Drive, according to Newport Beach police.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., a suspect shot two people, killing a woman described as “elderly,” authorities said.

Police have asked customers to avoid the mall while the investigation is underway.

Two suspects led authorities on a car chase to South Gate, where at least one person was arrested near Lincoln Avenue and Paramount Boulevard.

KCAL9 reports that several other people left the getaway vehicle in the Los Alamitos area earlier in the chase. Patch reached out to the Los Alamitos Police Department for comment, but a watch commander declined to say whether there was an active search for suspects in the city.
