Woman dead after horrific suspected knife attack

A new wave of alleged domestic violence has hit Australia, this time in far north Queensland.

Queensland police on Friday charged a 51-year-old man with the alleged murder of a 51-year-old woman near Innisfail.

The man and woman were each known, police said in a statement.

“It is alleged that an altercation occurred at a property in Mighell at around 4.15pm where the woman was fatally injured with a knife,” police said.

“The man is believed to have left the scene in a vehicle and was arrested on the Bruce Highway at Sandy Pocket just after 6pm.

“He has now been charged with one count of murder (domestic violence offence) and is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on July 1.

“Investigations are ongoing to determine what other offenses the man may have committed after leaving the scene.

“Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward immediately.”

It is the second suspected case of serious DV crime to hit Australia in two days, after a woman was found dead in Sydney's west on Thursday, apparently at the hands of a housemate.
