Woman charged with shooting victim on $25,000 bail

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A woman accused of physically assaulting a woman and then shooting her last week in North Memphis was released from jail Sunday on $25,000 bail.

Barbara Barcus, 53, is charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.

On June 16, Memphis police said they responded to an aggravated assault call on Leon Place. The victim said she was shot by a woman, later identified as Barbara Barcus.

According to reports, Barcus and the victim knew each other due to ongoing issues involving a man they were both intimately involved with.

Before the attack, the victim said she was outside on the phone when Barcus came to her house unexpectedly driving a gold Ford sedan.

That's when Barcus allegedly got out of the car and began confronting the victim, at gunpoint, about the man.

MPD says Barcus struck the victim at point-blank range in the left temple of her head with the handgun, knocking her to the ground.

While still on the ground, the victim said he saw Barcus get back into the Ford and fire a single shot from inside the vehicle in his direction.

Investigators were able to speak with a neighbor who claimed to have gone out to see the victim after hearing a single gunshot.

The neighbor said she saw a gold sedan driving in reverse and called the victim, but did not see or hear her outside.

According to the victim, she was still on the ground and disoriented after being attacked.

After Violent Crimes Unit investigators conducted an interview with the victim, she was able to positively identify Barcus in a photo lineup of six people. The victim also said Barcus continues to confront her and her family members.

Barbara Barcus is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Monday.
