Woman at Sandy homeless center arrested for murder

SANDY, Utah — Police arrested a resident of a homeless facility in Sandy on Sunday on suspicion of murder.

The Medically Vulnerable Persons Program Center in Sandy provides “transitional housing and medical services to seniors, veterans and medically fragile individuals who are homeless,” according to its website.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the body of Stephanie Lynne Hackett Carrasco, 62, was discovered Sunday evening by a roommate.

Police said in the affidavit that officers found Carrasco with blunt force trauma to the back of his head.

Police believe Carrasco's other roommate, Laura Northrup, 60, killed her based on evidence including video surveillance and blood found on a red fanny pack-style bag that Northrup was holding when she returned to her room.

According to the affidavit, police also found blood between Northrup and Carrasco's beds and on Northrup's clothing.

Police said Northrup refused to make a statement and requested an attorney after his arrest.
