Woman arrested in fatal fireworks crash in Galesburg, Illinois

A 65-year-old woman was arrested early Friday morning after allegedly striking and killing a man riding his bicycle near Lake Storey in Galesburg following the city's Fourth of July fireworks display.

The Galesburg Police Department said Martha E. Ray was arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal accident for her alleged role in the death of Eric K. McKinney, 46, after the Big Bang Boom fireworks display in Lake Story on Thursday.

Guelph police said they were leaving the lakefront after the show ended shortly after 11 p.m. when they found McKinney lying unconscious in the 3500 block of North Henderson Street. Medical personnel performed life-saving procedures at the scene before he was transported to OSF HealthCare St. Mary's Medical Centre.

McKinney was pronounced dead in the hospital emergency room at 12:16 a.m.

The police investigation showed that McKinney was struck by a southbound vehicle while he was riding his bicycle. They located Ray, arrested her and booked her into the Knox County Jail.

Ray was charged Friday with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. The Knox County District Attorney's Office filed a motion to deny her pretrial release. No date has been set for a hearing on the motion.

Police said an investigation into the accident was ongoing.
