Woman arrested in early morning Anchorage hit-and-run that sent pedestrian to hospital

A 47-year-old woman accused of striking a pedestrian with her vehicle early Thursday morning in Anchorage's Rogers Park neighborhood and leaving the scene has been taken into custody, police said.

Anchorage police responded to a report of a person lying in traffic in the area of ​​Maplewood Street and East Northern Lights Boulevard shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday, police said in an online statement . Officers found a man lying in the street and he was taken to hospital with injuries, police said in the release. The man is expected to survive, they said.

As officers responded to the scene, Anchorage Police Dispatch received a call from Camelia D. Harrison, who police said “claimed responsibility for striking the pedestrian.” Police said Harrison hung up and did not answer when police tried to call back. She then called police again shortly after 3 a.m. and told them where she was.

Officers contacted Harrison and conducted field sobriety tests, police said, and a DUI unit officer conducted additional tests.

“Then the decision was made to charge Harrison with driving under the influence,” police said in their release.

Harrison was taken to the Anchorage Correctional Complex, where she provided a sample showing that the alcohol level in her breath was zero, police said. They said Harrison's blood was drawn after obtaining a search warrant.

She was remanded to Hiland Mountain Correctional Center for drunken driving, as well as charges of third-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to render assistance, the police said. police. Harrison was also cited for driving with a suspended license and without proof of insurance, they said.

The charges against Harrison were not immediately available in online court records Thursday afternoon.
