Woman arrested by tactical team after threatening Dunkin' staff with gun

Rumford police say a woman is in jail after she allegedly walked up to the window of a Dunkin' drive-thru and pulled out a gun when employees refused to let her inside. On Wednesday, shortly after 8 p.m., officers were called to the Dunkin location at 158 Congress Street in Rumford. Store employees described a woman who allegedly approached the drive-thru window after closing time and asked to be allowed in to use the phone. When the employees refused, the woman pulled out a semi-automatic pistol before fleeing. Investigators and officers from multiple agencies searched the area, but the use of a K9 determined that she ultimately fled in a vehicle. Reviewing photos taken by store employees and surveillance footage from the area, an off-duty Mexican police lieutenant recognized the woman as Rebecca Sims, 33, from Mexico. “Although traumatized by the incident, the employees’ quick actions likely prevented anyone from being injured or killed,” Rumford Police Chief Tony Milligan wrote in a statement. “Cooperation from the provider of security video footage taken at a nearby facility resulted in the suspect being quickly identified.” Officers set up surveillance at his Granite Street home overnight while Rumford police obtained search and arrest warrants, authorities said. Due to the likelihood that Sims still had the gun she allegedly fired at Dunkin' employees, Rumford police called a state police tactical team to help take Sims into custody. Shortly before noon Thursday, the tactical team surrounded the house, ordering him out at gunpoint. Sims was reportedly arrested without incident and agents from Rumford and Mexico searched the home. Several weapons were seized, according to Rumford officials. Police found three guns – including the one suspected in the initial incident at Dunkin' – a shotgun, a machete, a hatchet, a bowie knife and several loaded magazines. Sims now faces a criminal threatening charge for a dangerous weapon, as well as another for threatening to expose a weapon. Sims' bail was set at $1,000 cash and was eventually transferred to York County Jail.
