Woman and boy stabbed at Japanese school bus stop near Shanghai

A Japanese woman and her son were injured and a Chinese woman was seriously injured Monday in a knife attack by a man while he was waiting for a bus from a Japanese school in Suzhou, near Shanghai, according to a head of the consulate general.

The Japanese Consulate General in Shanghai is gathering information about the attack, but there is no indication that the suspect, believed to be Chinese, intentionally targeted Japanese nationals, the official said.

According to the official, the two Japanese were taken to hospital and their injuries are not life-threatening.

The attacker was subdued on the spot.

The woman in her 30s and her son were waiting for another child to return from school in this city in Jiangsu province, which is home to many Japanese nationals and production facilities, the official said. adding that the Chinese woman served as a guide for the bus.

The attack sparked concern among the local Japanese community, with one Suzhou resident saying: “My colleague, whose child attends the school, left work early because of the incident. »

The Japanese embassy in Beijing has issued a security alert, saying stabbings have occurred recently in busy places in China, including parks and schools.

On June 10, four teachers from Cornell College in the US state of Iowa and a Chinese man were stabbed by a man in a park in northeast China's Jilin province after One of the teachers and the man bumped into each other. None of the injuries are life-threatening, according to local police.
