GLYNDON — There has been a fatal crash along Interstate 94, according to a news release from the Minnesota State Patrol.

Michael Wimme, 64, of Marco Island, Florida, was driving his Chevrolet Suburban west on I-94 with three passengers. Wimme was driving in heavy rain, according to the release, and left the road near mile marker 6 around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 24. A 90-year-old passenger was killed in the accident.

Wimme's vehicle struck the cable barrier and returned to the roadway, colliding with a tractor-trailer and trailer driven by Brandon Byron, 28, of Fargo. Byron was not injured.

Michael Wimme was also uninjured in the crash, the report said, as was one of his passengers, Michele Wimme, 66, also from Marco Island.

Another passenger in Wimme's vehicle was injured, but his life is not in danger. Jean Stroik, of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, was taken to a nearby hospital. Information about Wimme's other passenger, a 90-year-old woman from Stevens Point, will be released Saturday, May 25, the release said.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under the byline “staff.” Often, the byline “personnel” is used when rewriting basic informational documents that come from official sources, such as a city press release regarding a road closure, and that require little or no reporting. Sometimes this byline is used when a news story includes many authors or when the news story is formed by aggregating previously reported information from various sources. If outside sources are used, this is noted in the story.
