Winnetka officials search for woman after boat capsizes in Lake Michigan – NBC Chicago

A search and rescue mission for a 50-year-old woman was underway Monday morning in suburban Winnetka after a sailboat capsized in Lake Michigan overnight.

As of 6 a.m. Monday, the mission was at Tower Road Beach on Sheridan Road, the Winnetka Fire Department said.

At 2 a.m., authorities became aware of a 50-year-old woman missing from a capsized 12-foot sailboat when the boat's other passenger reached shore after swimming about two miles.

A search and rescue mission was immediately initiated, with Winnetka firefighters working with neighboring municipalities and the Coast Guard to help locate the missing swimmer, officials said.

According to authorities, several boats, drones and helicopters were used in the mission.

A preliminary investigation revealed the boat was launched from Evanston and capsized at dusk, the village of Winnetka said. The passenger who swam to shore was wearing a life jacket, the village added. The missing person was also said to be wearing a life jacket.

The capsized boat was two to three miles from shore, officials added.

The search comes as dive teams continue to search for a man who fell from a boat over the weekend in Chicago's Lake Michigan “Playpen.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become available.
