Wildfire burning in Pikes Peak and San Isabel Forest, U.S. Forest Service working on scene

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) — U.S. Forest Service crews are responding to a fire that broke out following a lightning strike near Manitou Reservoir in the Pike and San Isabel National Forest .

U.S. Forest Service officials said the “Manitou Fire” was 1 acre in size as of 3:35 p.m. Sunday afternoon. They say the fire started 4.5 miles to the northwest of Manitou Springs, on the Manitou Water Shed property, within a fuel processing unit.

The fire was initially reported at half an acre around 12:40 p.m. and grew to 1 acre during their last update just after 3:30 p.m.

Authorities say firefighters responded to the scene in the forest. These crews also benefit from the assistance of a helicopter. Responding agencies include: US Forest Service Engine 91, 4 Manitou Springs firefighters, 8 Colorado Springs Utilities personnel, Box Elder Job Corp and USFS Monument Helitac.

Smoke from this fire is visible from Colorado Springs. The Colorado Springs Fire Department posted on its of the USFS.
