WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A Wichita man was in court Tuesday, where he was sentenced for shooting at a car before it crashed, killing two people.

Javion Wimbley, 18, was sentenced to 365 months (30 years and 5 months) in prison. The judge ordered the sentence to run consecutively to a prior juvenile court conviction for a total of 501 months (41 years and 9 months) in prison.

Wimbley pleaded guilty in March to:

  • Two counts of intentional homicide
  • One count of aggravated battery
  • One count of criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon
  • One count of criminal discharge of a firearm

The incident occurred on February 21, 2022, near the intersection of Lincoln and George Washington in south Wichita.

Police at the time said someone was shooting at a car that eventually crashed, but court documents show none of the bullets hit the three people in the car.

Two of the people in the car died: Amill Williams, 21, and Alonzo Montgomery, 20, of Wichita. A 22-year-old woman was ejected from the car and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Court documents show Williams and Montgomery both died from blunt force trauma from the car crash. The vehicle's event data recorder showed the vehicle was traveling 83 miles per hour when it collided with a tree.

An on-scene investigation revealed evidence of a shooting in the area. Police said their investigation revealed that the three occupants of the car were being followed by an unknown vehicle. The people in the unknown vehicle began shooting at them.

In total, police found the shell casings came from four different firearms. One of the other suspects in the case, Elijah Sullivan, 20, pleaded guilty to two counts of voluntary manslaughter, criminal discharge of a firearm, aggravated battery and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon on May 14.

Sullivan is scheduled to be sentenced July 2.

Two other suspects remain charged with two counts of first-degree murder and other charges. James Lowe, 21, and Tre'Breh Jones, 20, remain incarcerated in the Sedgwick County Jail. Their cases are pending.
