What we know about the search for Briton Jay Slater, 19, missing in Tenerife

Spanish police say there have been “no developments” in the search for missing British teenager Jay Slater.

Slater, 19, was reported missing last Monday after failing to return to the apartment he shared with friends in Tenerife.

As the search entered its eighth day, local police told a reporter: “There is nothing. No developments.”

Here's what we know — and what we don't — about Slater's disappearance.

We know that Slater, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, traveled to Tenerife with friends – Lucy Law and another named Brad – to attend the NRG Tenerife Weekender music festival.

It was Slater's first foreign vacation without his parents. The festival, which bills itself as “three days of madness with pool parties, boat parties, outdoor raves, nightclub takeovers and much more”, took place from June 14 to 16.

Law said Slater decided to stay out after the final night of the festival with two other people he had met there, while she and Brad returned to their accommodation. She said Slater “ended up in the middle of nowhere.”

Her last known location was near the mountain village of Masca, an 11-hour walk from where she and Brad were staying. Law suggested Slater had not realized how far away he was and had missed a bus. “He went for a walk, using his maps on his phone and found himself in the middle of the mountains with nothing around.”

Law said his girlfriend told him in a frantic phone call on June 17 at 8:30 a.m. that he was “lost in the mountains, unaware of his surroundings, desperate for a drink and his phone was at 1%.” His phone then died.

Slater was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with shorts and sneakers. He was also reportedly carrying a black bag.

A civil guard [Spanish police] A spokesperson said he was reported missing at 9:04 a.m. Monday.

It also emerged that Slater had shared a Snapchat an hour before his disappearance, which showed him holding a cigarette in the home he had visited with the two men at around 7.30am.

The property was named Casa Abuela Tina, a holiday home annexed to a bar and restaurant on the edge of Masca. It was reportedly rented by two Britons who left the premises on Wednesday before returning to the United Kingdom.

A local woman named “Araceli”, who works in the business adjacent to the rental property, reportedly said Slater was seen “walking by himself” before he disappeared. She said: “I never saw the missing boy, but I know people have seen him walking by himself. I saw the two British guys who stayed here.

“They came for a latte several times. One was about 40 years old. The other was a little younger.”

Search teams in Tenerife limited their efforts over the weekend to small buildings near where his phone last rang.

On Sunday, officers could be seen surrounding two structures at the bottom of a ravine in the Teno Rural Park.

Efforts appear to have focused only on one area after days of searching in and around the village of Masca.

The Foreign Office said it was supporting Slater's family and was in contact with the island's authorities. Slater's mother arrived in Tenerife on June 18 and has since been joined by other family members.

A grainy CCTV image circulated on Monday that may show Slater walking past a church in the village of Santiago del Teide around 6pm on the day he disappeared.

It would have been about nine hours since his last contact with Law. Santiago del Teide is a 90-minute walk from Masca.

However, we do not know the source of the CCTV footage, nor when or where it was captured. It was first posted on the Jay Slater Missing Facebook group last Thursday and was subsequently published by various media outlets on Monday.

The Manchester Evening News reported that the image had been shared by Slater's family and friends in Tenerife, who believe it “matches Jay's appearance”.

But Slater's family have yet to comment on the image, and Spanish police have not confirmed whether it is part of the investigation.

It was also reported Tuesday that Spanish police are investigating Slater's background to determine if it is relevant to his disappearance.

According to the Daily Mail, police are aware of a previous conviction dating from 2023, when Slater was given a community sentence for violent disorder, for his involvement in an attack on a then 17-year-old with a machete. Spanish police have not confirmed to Yahoo News UK whether his disappearance is linked to this crime.

Ultimately, we don't know what happened to Slater in the hours after his phone battery died, or what physical state he was in.

We also don't know who Slater was staying with. Law told the Manchester Evening News she had spoken to those people but did not give any further information about them.

She said they told her Slater left their apartment around 8am on the day he disappeared to “catch a bus”.

It is also unclear what state the teenager was in at the time of his disappearance. Slater's mother told the Mail Online: “He was at a three-day festival so he must have consumed quite a bit of alcohol, but Jay was chatting on Snapchat with friends before he disappeared and seemed very sane.”
