What happened to Jay Slater? Theories behind British teenager's disappearance in Tenerife

Tenerife police say there have been “no developments” in the search for missing British teenager Jay Slater.

Slater, 19, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was reported missing eight days ago after failing to return to the flat he shared with friends.

As the search entered its eighth day, a local officer told a reporter: “There's nothing. No developments.”

Search teams in Tenerife had earlier focused their efforts this weekend on small buildings close to where his phone last rang.

On Sunday, Canary Islands Guardia Civil officers could be seen surrounding two structures at the bottom of a ravine in the Teno Rural Park.

Efforts appeared to be focused only on a single area after days of searching Masca village and the surrounding landscape.

As the search continues, here are some of the theories surrounding the teen's disappearance.

Debbie Duncan, Slater's mother who flew to Tenerife on Tuesday to help with the search, told the Daily Mail on Thursday that she feared her son had been abducted.

Slater allegedly called his friend Law around 8:30 a.m. Monday and told him he was “lost in the mountains, he wasn't aware of his surroundings, he desperately needed a drink and his phone was at 1 %”.

His last known location was in the isolated rural park of Teno, after returning to a rented apartment with two men who, like him, had attended the NRG music festival.

Duncan said: “'If anyone has it let them go, he's not a bad person, maybe he got together with strangers who befriended him .

“If he's lost, why hasn't anyone seen him? There are a lot of hikers and vacationers up there, so if he was lost, someone would have seen him, that's why I think 'He may have been taken somewhere.'

Slater disappeared after trying to walk back to his home after missing a bus. The walk from Slater's last known location in the north of the island to his accommodation would have taken around 11 hours on foot.

Speaking to GB News on Thursday, Canarian Weekly editor Chris Elkington suggested Slater may have “veered off course” in his attempt to return to his accommodation on Monday morning.

” It's very strange. If you enter the route into your phone, it will take you around the island in the opposite direction.

“That is why he is heading towards the rural park and not towards where he resides.

“The problem is that he veered off course. It is a very barren and dry area and with temperatures in the 20s, if you leave the road you can easily get lost or trip and fall. »

Any injury may have been exacerbated by the fact that he was without food or water and only wearing a t-shirt and shorts.
