UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — Utica police are under national scrutiny after officers allegedly shot and killed a 13-year-old juvenile Friday night.

On Friday, June 28, at approximately 10:18 p.m., Utica police conducted a traffic stop of two juveniles in the 900 block of Shaw Avenue. Officers said they then approached the two juveniles because they allegedly matched the description of individuals involved in an armed robbery the day before.

During the arrest, one of the juveniles, later identified by Utica police as Nyah Mway of Utica, allegedly fled on foot. According to a press release from the police, Mway brandished what appeared to be a handgun when one of the police officers pursuing them discharged his weapon, hitting the minor. Mway was transported to Wynn Hospital in Utica, where they succumbed to their injuries.

Following the incident, officers recovered a replica Glock handgun with a detachable magazine.

According to Utica Police, the officers involved in Friday's incident were identified as Officer Patrick Husnay – who was identified as the person who fired his weapon, Officer Bryce Patterson and Officer Andrew Citriniti.

A small protest took place at the Utica Police Station on Saturday, June 29, following an earlier vigil for Mway. Neither the demonstration nor the vigil gave rise to other incidents.

According to a joint statement from Mayor Michael Galime and Utica Police Chief Mark Williams, the department will work closely with the city's Public Safety Advisory Committee to keep the public informed about the incident. In the interest of transparency, the department also released a Google Drive link, which contains the body camera footage of the three officers and a photo of the replica handgun. The videos can be viewed here.

In accordance with New York State law regarding officer-involved shootings, the New York State Attorney General's Office of Special Investigations is investigating the incident to determine whether any state laws were violated. The Utica Police Department's Professional Standards Unit is also conducting its own investigation in parallel with the Attorney General's investigation.

This is an ongoing investigation. We will provide you with more information as it becomes available.
