Westport shooter was shooting when security guard fired shots that killed him

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Police say the 26-year-old man who died in a shooting in Westport early Sunday morning shot himself.

Around 1:20 a.m., officers in the Westport Entertainment District reported hearing several gunshots and rushed toward the sound. As they approached, they said they found several gunshot victims near the intersection of Westport Road and Broadway Boulevard.

First responders treated five victims, who were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. A sixth person, later identified as Jahquan Robinson, was found unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

On Monday morning, the Kansas City Police Department said Robinson was “actively shooting when Westport security arrived on scene and the security guard fired shots that struck him.”

The security guard was Westport security and not a police officer, KCPD said.

A person of interest, who was a security guard with Westport Public Safety Security, was arrested after the shooting, but on Sunday afternoon police announced she had been released.
