Westport security guard arrested, released in investigation into Kansas City shooting

A Westport security guard was arrested and later released by police after a shooting in the Kansas City neighborhood that killed one man and injured five others early Sunday.

Police arrested the subject of interest, who works for Westport Public Safety Security, in the shooting that broke out around 1:20 a.m. just east of Westport Road and Broadway Boulevard, according to spokesman Capt. Jake Becchina from the Kansas City Police Department. . The officer was later released pending further investigation.

“Detectives will continue to investigate and compile all findings of the investigation detailing the involvement of all individuals,” Becchina said, “and will provide those findings to prosecutors for review.”

Officers working in the Westport Entertainment District and the security guard headed to the scene when they heard gunshots.

Before the shooting, Becchina said there had been a large crowd in the area that had disbursed when the gunfire erupted. Detectives believe a disturbance escalated into gunshots from one or more people when the victims were hit.

Emergency medical services responded to the scene and six people were transported to hospital by ambulance or private vehicle, including Jahquan M. Robinson, 24, who was pronounced dead there.

The other victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Becchina said.
