Westbound Bay Bridge lanes reopen after fire on big rig near Treasure Island

All westbound lanes of the Bay Bridge reopened Friday afternoon, hours after a tractor-trailer caught fire during the morning commute, sparking a traffic nightmare ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

According to the California Highway Patrol, all lanes were open as of 5:40 p.m., more than eight hours after the incident began.

CHP issued a severe traffic alert at 9:23 a.m. after a tractor-trailer fire just east of Treasure Island closed the right and center lanes of the bridge.

KCBS Traffic posted a story about the fire at 9:12 a.m. with a Caltrans photo showing flames coming from the truck.

“The driver must have realized the caravan was on fire and called at the last second not to enter,” the message read.

CHP later confirmed that the rear wheels of the trailer caught fire before igniting the rest of the trailer, which was transporting oranges.

The fire was extinguished quickly, but the westbound lanes remained closed for some time. The CHP said the center lanes reopened shortly before 10 a.m., but the right lanes remained blocked.

The San Francisco Fire Department assisted with the incident and released photos and videos showing the dramatic fire.

There were no injuries in the trailer fire, San Francisco firefighters said.

Earlier Friday morning, another severe traffic alert issued eastbound from the Bay Bridge after an injury crash involving a driver who was reportedly going nearly 100 mph. This incident closed lanes for an hour.
