West Point man identified as driver shot and killed in 'road rage' incident, police say

CLEARFIELD — Police have identified the man shot and killed by another driver after a hit-and-run in Clearfield Monday evening, police said.

A crash occurred just before 6:30 p.m. near Industrial Parkway and State Route 193. One vehicle fled the scene and the other chased it and chased through residential streets, the deputy police chief said of Clearfield, Devin Rogers.

The driver pursuing the other vehicle called 911 after the crash and “continued to communicate his updated location with Layton dispatch while pursuing the other vehicle,” Clearfield police said in a statement prepared.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle stopped and exited the middle of the roadway, approached the other vehicle and a “shootout took place” in the area of ​​1200 W. 300 North, Rogers said.

Police said the man driving the vehicle that fled the scene was shot and killed during the incident. He was identified Tuesday as James Edward Saccato, 63, of West Point.

The driver who chased the other car, a man in his 30s, was the one who called 911 and is in custody, police said.

The area has been closed while police conduct further investigations.

Witnesses to the hit-and-run and “resulting road rage incident” are asked to call Layton dispatch at 801-497-8300 to report anything they may have seen or heard, a the police said.

Road rage incident in Lehi

This is the second serious road rage incident reported in Utah in two days. Another road rage incident occurred Sunday in Lehi.

Around 1:40 p.m., a driver cut off another car and braked it while it was traveling east on Main Street near 1300 West.

The driver who was cut off, identified as John Williams, 43, of Highland, followed the other car into a neighborhood where they both got out of their cars and had a “physical confrontation,” according to Lehi. Williams and a 38-year-old man exchanged punches, then the man was knocked unconscious with a blow to the head, according to a police affidavit.

The man was seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital, but was taken off life support Monday evening. Williams was arrested for investigation of aggravated assault.

Lehi Police are reminding drivers to stay calm and collected on the roadways.
