West Hartford Fire Department to Offer Youth Summer Fire Academy – We-Ha

The West Hartford Fire Department's Summer Youth Fire Academy this year will offer an introduction to the daily activities of a firefighter as well as an advanced level program.

Submitted

The West Hartford Fire Department is excited to offer a summer academy for young firefighters in collaboration with West Hartford Recreation Services and the West Hartford Professional Firefighters Union.

This unique opportunity will allow cadets to understand career paths in firefighting and emergency medical services. Cadets will receive direct training from West Hartford firefighters and paramedics (including physical fitness, first aid leadership and teamwork) and will have the opportunity to tour various fire apparatus and attend demonstrations with fire and extraction equipment.

The Fire Academy is very interactive, very hands-on and can sometimes be physically demanding. Most activities take place in teams of two under the direct supervision of a West Hartford firefighter and require campers to be able to follow explicit rules to ensure safety. For safety reasons, attendance at all sessions is mandatory and cadets must have completed the Fire Academy Basics before taking the Advanced Fire Academy Skills.

Transportation is not provided, so cadets will need to have transportation to different locations during the week (e.g., Conard High School, Newington Fire Tower, etc.), but they will remain at these locations for all day.

Fire Academy Basics will be offered July 22-26. The program will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to ages 13 to 17. The cost is $200 for West Hartford residents and $210 for non-residents.

The Fire Academy Advanced Skills Program will be offered July 29-August 2. The program will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to those ages 13 to 17. The cost is $200 for West Hartford residents and $210 for non-residents.

Registration is via the West Hartford Leisure Services RecDesk.
