Weapon scanners show promise in Richmond and Henrico schools as school year ends

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — As the school year ends for students in Richmond and Henrico County Public Schools, safety remains a major concern for both districts, as this year saw the implementation of weapon scanners in middle and high schools.

According to data from the Richmond Public Schools Care and Safety Team, during the 2023 to 2024 school year, a total of five firearms and 29 knives or knife-like items were confiscated in schools. middle and high schools. However, no weapons have been found at any college since the scanners were installed.

“We are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of students, staff and the community on school grounds,” a statement from Richmond Public Schools said. “We believe this added layer of security has been beneficial. »

The Richmond School Board recently debated expand gun scanners to elementary schools at Monday night's school board meeting. However, due to the high price, the board opted for further research before making a decision.

Henrico County Public Schools has taken a phased approach to implementing gun scanners. The new security measure follows multiple incidents involving threats and the recovery of firearms at Henrico schools.

Throughout the 2023 to 2024 school year, no weapons were found in any of Henrico's schools, a significant improvement from the seven weapons discovered on previous school year.

“Integrating gun scanners into an overall security plan helps create a safe and welcoming learning environment,” a statement from Henrico County Public Schools said.

This fall, all Henrico County students in grades K-12 will go through a weapons scanner before entering.

Hanover County Schools said there are currently no plans to add them for the 2024 to 2025 school year.
