Weapon Review: It's a pain to sit through!

Ashwin Ram

Armed is an action thriller starring Vasanth Ravi, Sathyaraj and Rajiv Menon in the lead roles. Directed by Guhan Senniappan. The music is composed by Ghibran.

Premise:

Vasanth Ravi is a content-hungry YouTuber. Rajiv Menon is a big shot eager to seize the most powerful weapon in the world. They both seek the superhuman for their respective needs. What happens after they discover that Sathyaraj is the power they seek is the remaining story.

Writing/Directing:

The main topic concerns a superhero serum and it's established with a solid backstory in the form of voiceover. But post that the movie gets into a completely awkward space trying to sandwich so many toppings into a paper-thin plot. As it stands, the narrative is confusing due to unwanted complications, nowhere native as the writing seems foreign and heavily influenced by many Hollywood films. Lots of unnecessary bits, like Ghost, Black Society, Flawless Corporation, Skull Gang, etc… Contrary to the director's intention, none of these elements give an international touch to the film, the content should have but it failed miserably. Something is constantly happening at a rushed pace, but the storyline is boring because it's impossible to connect with the tons and tons of situations and characters involved in the movie. After it is revealed that Sathyaraj is the superhuman of the interval, the flow worsens and behaves like a parody of material, as many tend to be serious plots as jokes. Some decent twists and turns towards the end, but since they came out of nowhere, there's no shock value. Also the way the movie used twists and turns is once again shitty. An aspiring racy action actor sometimes acts like a serial, because every other scene introduces a new character with a lame goal. Ends by giving a clue for a sequel, the confidence of the team is appreciable, we would have liked them to make the film with the same level of determination.

Performances:

Same flat performance of Vasanth Ravi with zero variation, this is not the biggest flaw of this film as there was no scope for acting. Sathyaraj's character could have been so much more, but poorly executed, especially him doing yoga in the air was an instant laugh out loud moment. Rajiv Menon looks like an Amul baby but he plays a menacing villain role which didn't suit him at all. Many familiar faces are signed up for less than a cameo role and barely appear in a scene like Kaniha, Yashika Anand, Mime Gopi, Baradwaj Rangan, etc… What an irresponsible decision to make.

Techniques :

There is a calming song by Ghibran, otherwise this is a film that doesn't give importance to songs or anything for that matter. Extremely loud background music with absolutely no rhythm. Inconsistent visual pattern with many low quality photos and the color tone is purely black, heavily influenced by Vikram. Clumsy from start to finish, such a monotonous editing scheme that conveys nothing with clarity. Bad action choreography, the stunts are so bad they're only worth making fun of.

Conclusion

The broad outlines of the story seem interesting, but the screenplay is filled with situations and characters that seem to have been ripped from the scribbles of rough notes. An actor without conviction and full of confusion.

Rating – 2/5
