“We will never be the same again; » Mother of teen killed in double homicide speaks out about her son's murder – WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio

DAYTON — The mother of a 16-year-old boy killed in a double shooting in Dayton last month is speaking out for the first time about his death.

Deante Johnson was shot and killed May 22 during a shooting on Shaftesbury Road. The shooting also killed Precious Taste, 32, who was four months pregnant at the time.

Nearly two weeks after the shooting, Johnson's mother still has questions she wants answered.

“Why go after a 16-year-old you don’t even know?” » asked Jennifer Louis.

As shown on Information Center 7 at 6:00 a.m.Louis said it was not unusual for his son to be at Taste.

“He is friends with the family. We all go to each other’s houses, go visit each other,” Louis said.

She emphasized that her son did not know Nicole “Nico” Cunigan, Jr., who police have charged with the murders.

“He didn’t know Nico at all,” she said. “Nico had just gotten out of prison. I don't even know Nico.

Louis believes his 16-year-old son should never have been killed. He had just finished his junior year at Trotwood High School, a school he loved.

“He loved fashion. He loved clothes. It was a school where he could go and get dressed at 10,” Louis recalls.

She said Deante, who she called “Day-Day,” was someone people, especially children, gravitated toward. Louis said Cunigan didn't care about any of that when he allegedly shot and killed his son.

“I'm 100 percent sure Nico was angry, he was enraged,” she said.

Louis said Nico spent the night before driving around town trying to find Taste, with whom he shared 4-year-old twins. When he broke into a side window of Taste's home, he killed her, her unborn son, and Johnson without any explanation.

“He must be in a cage somewhere,” she said of Cunigan, who remains at large.

Now Johnson's family and friends must deal with his loss.

“People will never be the same again, we will never be the same again. We can try to improve it, but we will never be the same,” she said.

News Center 7's Mike Campbell contacted Dayton police about their efforts to arrest Cunigan. They could not confirm rumors that searches had been conducted in Dayton and Springfield. They also declined to say whether U.S. Marshals were helping in the search.
