Waterbury teen arrested for illegal gun possession

A 19-year-old man was arrested after officers conducted a motor vehicle stop in Waterbury and allegedly found a stolen 9mm weapon and a “ghost gun,” police said.

Crime Prevention Unit officers were patrolling Madison Street in Waterbury Tuesday after recent complaints about weapons and drugs in the area, according to the Waterbury Police Department.

Officers allegedly observed an occupied and parked vehicle with motor vehicle violations and conducted a stop on the motor vehicle, police said.

Police say the driver was identified as Willie Redd of Waterbury.

During a search of the car, officers allegedly found two loaded 9mm firearms in the vehicle, one being an “illegal privately manufactured firearm, commonly referred to as a 'ghost' style weapon, and the another a Sig Sauer,” police said.

Police later learned the Sig Sauer 9mm firearm had been reported stolen last month in Waterbury.

Redd is currently subject to court-ordered conditions that prohibit him from possessing firearms or ammunition, according to police. He was placed under arrest and charged with two counts: weapons in a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a pistol or revolver, criminal possession of ammunition, unlawful transfer of a pistol/revolver, theft of a firearm, first degree violation of conditions of release. , criminal violation of a civil protection order as well as several motor vehicle violations.

Redd was being held on $750,000 bail pending his arraignment in court Wednesday, police said.
