Waterbury man sentenced to prison for violating his release with a gun

Alexander Calderon, 28, whose last residence was Waterbury, was sentenced Friday to six years in prison.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Waterbury man was sentenced Friday to six years in federal prison at a New Haven courthouse for illegally possessing a firearm and violating the terms of his supervised release, according to the U.S. Attorney for district of Connecticut.

Alexander Calderon, 28, who last resided in Waterbury, was on probation following a prior federal drug conviction, according to prosecutors.

In April 2019, Calderon was sentenced in Hartford federal court to several years in prison followed by supervised release for a gang-related drug trafficking offense, prosecutors said. When Calderon was released in December 2021, he began serving his three years of supervised release.

Prosecutors said four victims were injured in a shooting shortly after midnight on March 21, 2022, outside a bar on Scovill Street in Waterbury. A Waterbury police detective who was nearby said he saw Calderon throw a silver handgun under a vehicle.

Calderon was taken into custody as officers recovered the weapon, a Walther PPK .380 handgun, according to prosecutors. Officers also found several spent shell casings at the scene, including a .380-caliber shell casing that was connected to the handgun abandoned by Calderon, prosecutors said.

Calderon was arrested on March 21, 2022 and has been in custody since. Prosecutors said he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon on Jan. 5.

According to prosecutors, Calderon was sentenced to 64 months in prison for the firearm offense and an additional eight months in prison for violating the terms of his supervised release.

At the time of the shooting, Calderon was charged with several offenses, including reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm and criminal possession of a firearm. Online court records do not indicate the status of those charges.
