WATCH: Teenage Employee Uses Jiu-Jitsu Training to Take Down Suspected Thief at Gym

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — An Indianapolis teen used his mixed martial arts skills to stop a suspected thief who broke into a gym earlier this week.

According to the gym manager, the 18-year-old employee of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Indianapolis confronted the man who allegedly tried to break into his car outside.

Surveillance video from inside the gym shows Gavin Archer opening the door to speak to the man when the suspect lunged at him.

Archer quickly used his combat skills to take the man down.

“Through Gavin's years of training in martial arts and jiu-jitsu, he was able to minimize the blows thrown at him…by securing the man's back and choking him to remove the immediate threat of danger in order to so he can call the police,” Ian Pomfret, the gym manager, wrote on Instagram.

Later that day, the suspect was found at a nearby hospital and taken into custody.

According to Promfret, Archer is a jiu-jitsu blue belt. The teen credited the gym for his workout: “Who knows what would have happened,” Archer wrote on Instagram.

The identity of the suspect and the charges against him are unknown.

“This is why Jiu Jitsu saves lives,” Pomfret added.
