Washington man sentenced in double-fatal crash in Nebraska

A Washington man was sentenced to two and a half years in prison on two motor vehicle homicide charges for a crash last year in Furnas County that killed two people and seriously injured three others.

Kyiaz Ulanov, 29, of Lynwood, Washington, pleaded no contest to the crimes.

Furnas County District Judge Patrick Heng sentenced him to prison Thursday, with credit for one year and one month he has already served, plus one year of post-release supervision .

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, on April 27, 2023, Ulanov ran a stop sign while on Nebraska 89 near Beaver City in a Ram 3500 pickup truck pulling an empty trailer.

He struck the passenger side of a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, killing two of the passengers, Miriam Rodriguez, 46, and Sloan Luna-Portillo, 13.

Three other passengers – the girl's father, 43-year-old Olvin Luna, and two 11-year-old children, a girl and a boy – were flown to hospitals in Lincoln and Wichita, Kansas, for be treated for their injuries.

Shortly before the crash, the family had moved from Holdrege to Burlington, Colorado, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.
