Washington DC man convicted in supermarket shooting

WASHINGTON DC – Ivan Dixon, 19, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced for his involvement in a shooting outside a local supermarket in Northeast Washington in September 2023. United States Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department announced the sentencing today.

In March 2024, Dixon pleaded guilty to charges including assault with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. He also faced charges in an unrelated case for carrying a pistol without a license. The sentencing, delivered by the Honorable Robert Okun, concluded with Dixon receiving an 84-month prison term, the maximum limit for the assault charge, followed by three years of supervised release.

The case stems from an incident in which Dixon, driving a Ford Transit van, targeted a victim parked outside a supermarket. After a calculated approach, Dixon fired 16 shots as the intended victim and an innocent bystander entered the supermarket. While the intended target escaped unharmed, the bystander suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being shot five times. Dixon's actions led to his arrest and guilty plea earlier this year.
