Wanted Maryland man charged with murder of probation officer arrested in West Virginia

HURRICANE, W.Va. — A wanted man is in jail after being arrested Saturday in connection with the death of a Maryland patrol and probation officer.

According to the U.S. Marshal's Office, Emanuel Sewell of Chevy Chase, Maryland, was arrested Saturday along I-64 near Hurricane after law enforcement received information reporting a person matching Sewell's description.

Sewell is charged with second-degree murder for the officer's death.

Deputies say Sewell damaged three police cars before being forced to comply after refusing to stop Saturday.

On Friday, May 31, the Montgomery County, Maryland Police Department was dispatched to a home around 5:50 p.m. to conduct a welfare check on a Maryland parole and probation officer. They said the officer failed to show up for work following a residency check on Sewell, who is a registered sex offender.

When officers arrived, they found a man dead inside the home, but they said Sewell was nowhere to be found.

The identity of the agent has not been released.

The Hurricane Police Department, Putnam Sheriff's Department and West Virginia State Police assisted the U.S. Marshal's Southern District of West Virginia in Sewell's arrest.
