VSP identifies man killed in Montgomery County police shooting

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Virginia State Police have released the identity of the man accused of stealing a trailer before he was shot and killed by officers on June 4.

Jason Lee McDuffy Beckley, 44, of West Virginia, died of his injuries at the scene on Peppers Ferry Road outside Christiansburg after leading law enforcement on a pursuit in motor vehicle that started in Giles County.


Police said McDuffy was stopped on Peppers Ferry Road and approached by officers when he allegedly pulled out a gun, leading to shots being fired.

The case is still ongoing. The VSP Criminal Investigation Bureau in Salem will present its evidence to the Montgomery County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office for review.

GILES COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Giles County Sheriff's Office has released details about what led to the chase and eventual police shooting that occurred in Montgomery County early on the morning of June 4.

In a news release provided by the Sheriff, a complaint was received that a tow dolly was reported stolen from a local business in Narrows, Virginia on the evening of Monday, June 3rd.

On the morning of Tuesday, June 4, according to the sheriff, law enforcement officers saw a Chevrolet Avalanche transporting a vehicle on the stolen cart.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Giles County deputies, Narrows police and Pearisburg police, then attempted to stop the Chevrolet Avalanche on Route 460 East near the Ripplemead exit.

The sheriff says the driver allegedly refused to exit the vehicle and instead fled the scene. Law enforcement officers pursued the vehicle to the Montgomery County line, where deputies and officers from that jurisdiction took over the pursuit.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The City of Christiansburg reports that multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in a vehicle pursuit early in the morning of June 4, which ended with shots fired on Peppers Ferry Rd.

According to the City of Christiansburg, around 6:54 a.m. Tuesday, a police pursuit that began in Giles County entered Montgomery County.

The Blacksburg Police Department responded and deployed spike strips to immobilize the vehicle. After striking the spike strips, the vehicle continued to flee police toward the town of Christiansburg.

Christiansburg police joined the pursuit and pursued the vehicle as it returned to Montgomery County.

The pursuit ended when officers from the Town of Christiansburg, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police stopped the vehicle on Peppers Ferry Rd. at Vickers Switch Rd.

Additional details are limited; however, during the stop, shots were fired. The driver's status is currently unknown.

Virginia State Police are currently investigating the incident.
