Visitors to Mount Trashmore react to deadly weekend shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — “It’s a shame where the world is today. There is no respect. I don’t understand,” said Frank Cassisa, a visitor to Mount Trashmore Park, just two days after a fatal shooting in the park.

On May 25, the Virginia Beach Police Department (VBPD) said a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man were shot at a park near the Summer Carnival. VBPD said the girl died at the hospital and the man was seriously injured.

10 On Your Side's KaMaria Braye visited Mount Trashmore Monday morning to ask visitors about the weekend's filming.

“I am so sorry for the people who were shot, and even for the small family who died. I'm very sorry, but this is the world we live in, said park visitor Joseph Herbert.

The shooting happened near the Mount Trashmore Summer Carnival in the 300 block of Edwin Drive.

The VBPD said there was a fight at the carnival that was quickly broken up by off-duty deputies who were providing security at the event.

Shortly after, the fight resumed in the Mount Trashmore parking lot on Edwin Drive.
It happened around 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, several officers searched for evidence around a playground in Mt. Trashmore.

“It's sad to see this, you know, coming to a park like this and people are supposed to go in there and have a good time seeing incidents like this,” said Eric Harrison, a park visitor.

This violence constitutes the 7th deadly shooting in the city this year. This is the third shooting where a child has been killed.

10 On Your Side asked park visitors if they were afraid of attending community events or being in public spaces.

” Not for me. For others, I am. Be careful. Look around you all the time. Watch where you walk, who you talk to. And just have that attitude because, you know what? You’re not friends with everyone,” Cassisa said.

“You know, you have to be a little skeptical about coming to places like this now. you know, because of what's going on, you know, there's a lot of senseless shooting going on here,” Harrison said.

VBPD launched an evidence submission portal for people to submit videos or photos of any person, or vehicles, involved in fights/shootouts or other crimes at the Summer Carnival, as well as off-site in parking lots.
