Violent weekend in Washington leaves teen dead and community devastated

Community members said they would like to see more officers and more funding.

WASHINGTON — It was another violent week in the District.

Friday evening, an 18-year-old man was killed and two others injured at 16th Street and W Street, Southeast, in the Anacostia Historic District.

Saturday, a 38-year-old man was shot and killed in the 700 block of Atlantic Street in the southeast section of Washington Highlands.

Two hours later, a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed in the 600 block of 18th Street, Northeast, just behind the Rosedale Recreation Center.

Sondra Gilbert, a 30-year Rosedale resident, is calling on leaders for help.

“I am devastated because we lost a child. Our community does not have the support it needs. People are asking you to vote for them. When we cast our vote, we need to see something done about it. » said Sondra Gilbert.

Pastor Tony Herndon of Grace Nation Ministry works with families in the DMV who have been affected by gun violence. He provides counseling, mentoring, food, and most recently, working in the DC Juvenile Detention Center.

“We go inside to hear what they're going through so we can make this happen, because we make all the decisions for them without really knowing the problem.” said District Senior Pastor Tony Herndon, Jr.

This service helps teens re-enter society with a plan and support system that families trust.

“We go to areas where there is conflict and help young people get out of it so they can go back and give them a purpose in life. » said Pastor Herndon.

Community members said they would like to see more funding to recruit more officers into the community. Gilbert hopes the next election will bring change.

“I'm heartbroken. I can't imagine these parents losing their lives. With these new elections, we'll see who cares about us,” Gilbert said.
