Video: Teen arrested for attacking grandmother over food

A 19-year-old man caught on camera assaulting his grandmother has been arrested by Western Cape police for assault.

In the video, the teenager is seen slapping his grandmother following an argument over food. He slaps her so hard that the pot falls and the grandmother lands on her knees.

He is then heard threatening to kill her as she continues to ask him what she did to make him attack her.

Western Cape police spokesperson Andrè Traut said on Thursday the suspect, who is the victim's grandson, was arrested at his home in Wallacedene on Wednesday night. He was due to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court.

Traut said:

Crimes against women and children are at the top of the SAPS priority list and we will not turn a blind eye to any form of violence in this regard. Kraaifontein police became aware of a video that went viral on social media showing a teenager assaulting an elderly person and registered a case for the incident last night.

Traut said the victim, from Wallacedene in Kraaifontein, had been found and was being treated in hospital for an illness unrelated to the attack. But she declined to press charges.

He said:

Further investigation revealed that the incident happened a month ago at the victim's home and SAPS were called to the scene, but the family took the matter into their own hands and refused police assistance.

Traut said that after the video of the incident was released, the SAPS intervened and opened a case on behalf of the victim due to the seriousness of the attack.

He added:

Crimes against women and children are at the top of the SAPS priority list, and we will not turn a blind eye to any form of violence in this regard.

The arrest comes after several people on social media expressed their anger, with many wanting to “personally teach him a lesson in respecting the elderly.”

According to some social media users, by the time the teenager was arrested, members of the community had already taken the law into their own hands and attacked him.
