Video shows fight at Miami Gardens gym in which man was stabbed; suspect arrested – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) – A chaotic confrontation at a South Florida gym that ended with a man being stabbed and another arrest was caught on camera.

Miami Gardens police and Miami-Dade firefighters responded to the 24-Hour Fitness Center, located at 19371 NW 27th Ave., around 6 p.m. on May 9.

Police say the suspect, Andrew Rodriguez, 28, had come to the gym to fight. When the two men began punching each other, Rodriguez pulled out a knife.

A video shows Rodriguez entering the gym without registering. Moments later, he digs into his gym bag and pulls out a knife. After an exchange of words with another guy, the two began fighting. Both began rolling around on the floor, punching each other in the face and body.

As they continued to fight, police said, Rodriguez pulled out the knife and stabbed the other man in the chest, forearm and hip.

According to the arrest report, the fight started after Rodriguez approached the victim at the gym and made remarks about her disabled daughter.

Rodriguez told the victim, “You are weak, just like your daughter,” the report said.

Witnesses were present to see the fight unfold.

“I heard a noise, I turned around and I saw them fighting,” one witness said. “And I saw the guy sitting next to me stab the guy in the ribs.”

The witness described what happened after the victim was stabbed.

“Then the guy was stumbling, shoving, trying to get away from him, and then the guy who stabbed him ran to get his stuff to leave and his whole arm was covered in blood,” the witness said.

Surveillance video shows the victim running toward the front door leaving a trail of blood. Rodriguez ran toward the back exit of the gym with a blood-stained shirt.

The victim was airlifted to the trauma unit at Aventura Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

Moments later, drone video shows Rodriguez, shirtless, running through the area after the stabbing.

Nearly a month after the gym stabbing, Rodriguez turned himself in to Miami Gardens police.

Police said Rodriguez did not give them a motive for why he did it, but the victim said there was resentment over a former lover.

Rodriguez remains behind bars and is charged with attempted murder.

His trial is scheduled for October.
