Video shows deadly shooting of suspect by Aurora police on May 4

DENVER (KDVR) — The Aurora Police Department has released body-worn camera footage and its account of the May 4 response call when officers shot and killed a suspect.

The incident took place near 14th Avenue, in the 1400 block of Clinton Avenue. Officers were initially called to the scene after reports of shots fired and an armed man. The department shared a 911 call in which a victim reported a man with a gun to his head in the caller's home, then told dispatchers the gunman shot him in the leg .

The victim later told a police officer that the suspect was a friend who was sitting on the victim's couch with a gun pointed at his head. He fired one shot into the house, the victim told police, and that's when the victim called 911 and was later shot.

Officers arrived around 7:45 p.m. and found the suspect in a red Mustang leaving the scene, prompting a police pursuit. The department said the chase was brief, with officers quickly losing sight of the vehicle.

Other officers remained at the original scene and located the victim, a 29-year-old Aurora man. While speaking with the victim, Aurora police were informed by bystanders and witnesses that the suspect had returned and was seen “looking out a window” in the alley near where the initial shooting occurred.

The video shows officers yelling at the suspect before shooting seconds later.

“The suspect was still armed with a firearm, which continues to pose an immediate threat to community members and officers,” said Heather Morris, interim chief of the Aurora Police Department, during the pre-recorded incident briefing. “Both officers gave commands to the suspect before firing their weapons.”

Aurora firefighters arrived on scene after officers fired their weapons and performed life-saving actions, according to Aurora police. The suspect was then transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The department identified the suspect as 28-year-old Jose Rodriguez-Balderrama.

Officers also reported recovering a .40-caliber Glock 22 handgun that had a high-capacity 20-round magazine and an “auto switch” that the department said allows the user to convert a weapon semi-automatic handgun into a fully automatic weapon.

The two officers who fired their weapons at the suspect were assigned to restricted duties on a non-patrol mission. The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating to determine whether officers took criminal action.
