Victims of a fatal fire in a house identified in the parish of Iberia | News

The victims of a fatal fire Sunday in Iberia Parish have been identified by the Iberia Parish Coroner's Office as Allen Viator, 54, and Judy Viator, 51, both of New Iberia.

The fire broke out early Sunday morning. Just before 5:30 a.m., Iberia Parish Fire District #1 responded to a call about a mobile home fire in the 6400 block of Freetown Road in New Iberia. Firefighters found the bodies of the married homeowners inside.

Through the initial investigation, deputy state fire marshals determined the fire started in the central area of the home. At this time, although the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, deputies cannot rule out an electrical malfunction as a potential cause. Extreme weather conditions in the area at the time of the fire are also considered a possible contributing factor.

Finally, deputies could not confirm the presence of working smoke alarms in the home.

State Fire Marshal Bryan J. Adams reminds all Louisiana families of the proven life-saving capabilities of smoke detectors. The Operation Save-A-Life program can help families access these devices for free.
