Victims named in Ventura shooting and Highway 118 hit-and-run

Here is a summary of recent incidents and announcements from Ventura County agencies:

Name of shooting victim

Authorities have released the name of a man shot and killed in Ventura Saturday evening.

Ventura resident Jonathan Sanchez was 35 years old, the Ventura County medical examiner's office reported. The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the circumstances were homicide, the medical examiner determined.

The Ventura Police Department received a call around 10:45 p.m. Saturday that a shooting had occurred in the 100 block of West Simpson Street on the city's west side. Officers arrived minutes later and provided emergency medical aid, as did firefighters and paramedics, before Sanchez was taken to hospital, where he later died.

The initial police investigation revealed that the attacker approached Sanchez, who was sitting in the passenger seat of a vehicle, shot him and fled on foot. The attacker was described as wearing all black. No other identifying information has been released.

Law enforcement officials described the incident as isolated and said there was no immediate threat to the public. No arrests had been announced as of Wednesday.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting is asked to call 805-650-8010.

Man killed in Moorpark hit-and-run

Authorities have identified the pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run along Highway 118 in rural Moorpark Sunday night.

Luis Morales, 88, resided in Moorpark, the Ventura County medical examiner's office reported Wednesday. The cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries and the circumstances were ruled an accident, the medical examiner found.

The California Highway Patrol is asking for the public's assistance with its investigation.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday, the CHP received a call about a body lying on the side of 118, west of Montair Drive.

Officers found Morales seriously injured, the CHP said. Firefighters attempted to save his life, but he was pronounced dead.

Police said they determined Morales was struck by a vehicle based on his injuries, physical evidence and information provided by witnesses. Witnesses described the vehicle as possibly a large, dark-colored pickup truck, which was traveling westbound without stopping after the crash.

The case remained under investigation Wednesday. Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP's Moorpark office at 805-553-0800.
