Victim of collision in West Valley City on I-215 identified

WEST VALLEY CITY — Police have identified the man killed in a two-vehicle collision on I-215 in West Valley City Friday evening.

Around 4:20 p.m., Utah Highway Patrol troopers said they responded to a “serious crash on I-215 W southbound at 3100 South.”

According to a press release, Leonardo Abraham Angel Mejia, 48, had parked his Chevrolet Tahoe on the left shoulder of the road and was outside the truck, between the barrier and the vehicle when a Nissan pickup truck drifted out of his lane and hit the truck.

The truck was violently pushed into Angel Mejia, causing fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Utah Highway Patrol, and “the circumstances surrounding the other vehicle's departure from its lane remain under investigation.”

Angel Mejia's city of residence has not been revealed.

All three left southbound lanes were closed while officers investigated and cleared the scene.

A highway patrol spokesperson said the driver of the Nissan pickup truck did not suffer any serious injuries.
